Bharata Mata College, located in Thrikkakara, Ernakulam district of Kerala is a cutting edge Arts and Science co-educational institute of higher education in the aided sector with special focus on research and educational technology. It was re-accredited at the A level by NAAC in 2014 and is affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University. Established in 1965 by His Eminence the late Joseph Cardinal Parecattil.
The Department of Commerce is one of the premier departments in Bharata Mata College, which is a pioneer in research focused learning. The Department started functioning on 18th July 1978 with a pre-degree Commerce group of 60 students. The department got sanction for the degree course on 7th August 1980 with a strength of 50 students. Prof. C Seethadevi became the first Head of the Department. The department got promoted to a Post Graduate department on 26th November 1981 with a sanctioned strength of 18 students. The Post Graduate Department of Commerce was elevated as an approved Centre for Research in Commerce under Mahatma Gandhi University in the year 1997. The department has an efficient team of teachers, which includes an International Fide Rated Chess Player (Ms. Nimmy A. George), a Chartered Accountant, (CA Joseph Joy Puthussery), a Ph.D. holder and a trainer in statistical analysis through software. The department has one minor project to its credit. The guest faculty members of the department are all UGC-NET holders. 13 students have qualified UGC NET/JRF/ SET in last 3 years. M.Com students produce the best dissertations across the state and secured best paper awards for various state level and national level competitions every year, since 2015. Many of the former students pursue higher education in IIM’s and other prestigious institutes, while many have been placed in leading companies as top executives. Some of the students have also turned out to be successful entrepreneurs.
